One facet at a time.

I'm in a reflective mood today, which is great when you happen to be standing in the National Portrait Gallery. It also means I have a hypothesis to run past you. Hypothesis: Portraits used to project the aspirations of their subjects. They don’t bother with that anymore. In the early colonial galleries with golden frames, they are living the aspirational dream. Fine clothes, self-conscious poses, all artifice and theatricality and somewhat archaic glamour. As you move to the later nineteenth century, it's the same idea, but more assertive. One doesn't argue with their didactic stares, dark suits and backgrounds.
